I always think of Bertrand Russel when I think of privilege and contribution. And he certainly worked hard. There's something about the privilege being in choosing what to work hard in. Meaningful work.
To me, the ideal society would be one in which all individuals are empowered and inspired to pursue meaningful work, on their own individual "edge" of challenge.
Worse still, sometimes you earn things that you end up losing again later on... life is a continuous project that way
This is so true. You do the work, you get the outcome... except life isn't static, and what you "earned" is never truly yours.

I wonder about the analytical approach. Defining "hard work" would become qualitative awfully fast.
